Our Story

Our Story

Glad is committed to doing everything we can to create a better environment for generations to come. Here's how:

  • Developing new trash bags that use less plastic while providing greater strength than ever before
  • Being more responsible in the way we manufacture and package our products
  • Actively encouraging more people to recycle and compost by developing innovative products and partnering with local municipalities to spread awareness nationwide

OUR PRODUCTS

We believe in driving out waste, starting with our products. From bags that stretch to hold more to reusable containers to bags with odor-neutralizing technology that prevent throwing out smelly trash before bags are filled. We even offer composting and recycling bags to help divert waste from landfills. Most recently we developed a new way to produce a stronger trash bag using 6.5% less plastic. These bags will help save 6.5 million pounds of plastic annually, the equivalent of 140 million trash bags out of landfills. All small steps that can make a big difference for our environment.

BEYOND THE BAG

We also work hard to be responsible when it comes to manufacturing and operations. Glad reuses scrap plastic left over from the manufacturing process, we reduced packaging materials for our Glad® Tall Kitchen trash bags, and we send whatever we can't re-use to be recycled. We've also invested a lot of resources into reducing our energy footprint, from sourcing and manufacturing to delivery.

Beyond the Bag

LOCAL COMPOSTING WORK

Of course, we know that simply reducing the impact of our products and operations isn't enough. Glad has an ongoing outreach and education program aimed at spreading adoption of composting.

We partnered with NY Compost to help increase compost diversion in NYC. This innovative group provides residential compost pick-up by bike for NYC residents where there is currently no city-wide residential compost program. It's a creative solution that can help make a big difference.

We're also partnering with cities to promote zero waste efforts across the country. This includes Seattle where we helped promote participation on the city's composting program through product sampling and education initiatives at city events and with local bloggers. Head across the country to Princeton, NJ where we helped launch a pilot program to distribute one thousand cartons of Glad® Compostable bags along with kitchen compost bins - the first-ever compost program of its kind in New Jersey! Only by working together can we make big change.

RECYCLING SANDWICH BAGS

Did you know that clean, dry sandwich bags can be recycled at the same locations that accept plastic shopping bags? When you're done using them, recycle them! We also commend people who use our reusable GladWare® containers. They last even longer and can be recycled at any recycling location that accepts yogurt containers.

Turn up the volume on recycling

Of course, not everyone has easy access to recycling options. That is why we partnered with Waste Management on a sandwich bag recycling pilot in select U.S. school districts. We provided bins to collect used sandwich bags that were later sent to nearby recycling plants to run an analysis on an efficient and effective process for recycling sandwich bags. We hope we can expand the program in years to come, and continue to look for additional ways to reduce the overall impact of our products, including increasing recycled content.

OUR PARTNERS

Glad has always been about responsible waste through our innovation, products and partnerships. We've been partners of Keep America Beautiful for 27 years, providing millions of bags for the Great American Clean-up and more recently supporting America Recycles Day waste reduction and composting efforts on college campuses. We also launched a One Bag Campaign across the country to help consumers reduce waste at parties and other events with the ultimate goal of only one bag of waste to landfill, and the rest diverted to recycling and composting. Together with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education we helped reduce waste within university and college football programs. Learn more.
